ADULT ADOPTIONS

Adult adoptions can be very satisfying - perhaps you have wanted to do a stepparent adoption for years, but have been unable to get the consent you needed to make that happen.  Once the adoptee is an adult, no consent is required, so the stepparent adoption can finally happen.  Or perhaps you want to formalize a relationship with someone who has always been like a parent or a child to you.  Adult adoption can make that happen.   

Although adult adoption can be relatively simple to accomplish, there are serious permanent implications to the creation and termination of relationships that happens with any adoption.  Because of that, it is a good idea to have an adoption attorney help you with the process.  It is important to consider if there are reasons not to do an adult adoption, or not to do one at this time.  It is also important to have the right people signing the right documents in the right places so you end up with the relationships that you were intending to end up with.   

Representation is valuable in adult adoptions, but it tends not to be expensive.

And last, but not least, we do all the work:

• We prepare the documents for you to sign
• We file them
• We arrange to get your hearing on the court's calendar
• We prepare and present the documents for the judge to sign
• We conduct the in-person hearing (if there is one - which there currently is not due to COVID precautions)
• We obtain certified copies of the adoption decree for you, and 
• We apply for the new birth certificate.  

You just need to provide us with some information, sign where we tell you to sign, and show up in court for your final hearing (if there is one).
